Description

More commonly known simply as “The Colosseum”, The Flavian Amphitheatre is a giant amphitheatre built in Rome under the Flavian emperor Vespasian between 70 and 72 CE and finally dedicated in 8- CE by Titus. It is located just east of the Palatine Hill on the grounds of what was Nero’s Golden House. At one time, there was a lake that was the centerpiece of the palace but Vespasian wanted to replace the emperor’s private lake with a public facility so the lake was drained and the amphitheatre was placed in that spot. Most of the earlier amphitheatres were all dug into hillsides for additional support, this one is freestanding using a complex system of barrel vaults. This image is take from the west showing the sunrise in the east during the spring when the flowering trees are in bloom. This helps color the sky and breakup the usual blue adding reds and yellows.
FInished size is 19.3″ x 14.2″.
